Shadow Puppet Theater
Shadow puppets are easy to make and are one of the most fun ways to bring a story to life in a performance. We made our own puppet theater out of cardboard box and put our characters in front of an illuminated backdrop to create an illusion of moving images...and we tried to make it work!!! So now, on with the show!

To Our Beloved Prophet (PBUH)
We, first and second graders, are celebrating Prophet's Day in a special way this week. We read about what our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to do and we are trying to follow his steps in his deeds and sayings because he's our messenger and we do love him.
May the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) guide us in all what we do.
Happy Prophet's Day to you!
Math with Mom and Dad
On Thursday,February 18th,the math period was not the same as everyday.Special visitor were present in our class.Seven parents were invited to attend the math class with their children.Students were divided into 7 groups and every parent joined one.The session started with a powerpoint presentation:''Fantastic fractions".This presentation defined what are fractions and how do we use them in our daily lives. Then, collaborative work started.Students' and parents' job was to compare unlike fractions using fraction bars. Each group selected a reporter to announce the group's result. At the end of the session, every parent filled a questionnaire to check if they enjoyed this session and if they would like to repeat this experience with their children. Also, every parent took a thank you card for their effective contribution.
When mom and dad are present Learning becomes definitely so much fun!As for me,I enjoyed teaching this session.

Joint Efforts to Rescue Animals: The American Embassy and BETA
"Education is not merely the knowledge of facts, but of values." To reach that sublime aim, our school works on providing our students with opportunities that help raising them to be responsible citizens and environmentalists with a deep sense of commitment to the values of Islam as well. One of these values is the humane treatment of animals. For that purpose, an important event organized by The American Embassy and the BETA, Beirut for Ethical Treatment of Animals Organization was held last Thursday at school. The focus was on raising students' awareness of how to treat animals well, take care of them, and preserve those that might become endangered.
The students watched a movie titled "Free Willy" about saving whales, and then the representatives of BETA gave a presentation about their work with animals and also offered some valuable information and tips about pets especially kittens. Students were eager to ask questions that they were more than happy to answer. The event was covered by the French T.V.
Special thanks go to The American Embassy and BETA for their active work and efforts regarding this important issue. They have widened students' knowledge and helped in developing students' awareness and sense of responsibility regarding that issue. We thank the cultural attaché Ms Jennifer Williams and her assistant Ms Diana Copty for joining us and we look forward for more cooperation on such honorable deeds.
A Message From A New Friend, Mr. John Parisi
Dear Ms. Rawya:
To introduce myself, my name is John, and I live in America. I am eighty years old, retired from the Post Office and now would like to write to someone in a foreign country like Lebanon. Lebanon is a very interesting country to learn about. Now that I am retired I can pursue what interest me the most, and that is to write to someone in another country, and to learn their customs etc..
I have much experience with six to eight year olds. Sometimes I go to our school and tell stories to the children. I don't have a picture to send you by computer. If I have the name of the school and the address I would like to write and put pictures in the mail. It is wonderful that you are teaching the children English.Tell your students hello for me, hello, from someone far away. I would like to hear from you.
Sincerely yours,
John Parisi

Motivation: The major key for active learning
Motivation is the most crucial element of a child's education. It is one of the primary causes of the range in score. Thus, inorder to maximize students' interest in learning, students must be motivated.
Here are some ways I use to motivate my students:
1- I start every session by linking the lesson to students' everyday experiences, such as placing problems in real life context.
2- I manage time using stop watch.Students will be excited to finish their classwork on time.
3- I let students decide what they would like to do in every session by setting "Today's Plan" together.
4- I encourage students to concentrate on the learning process rather than the final outcome.
5- I focus on group activity and collaborative work, this allow students to share the thinking load and act as models for each other.
6- I implement active and student-involved activities to increase students' interest in the subject.
