Making a Difference

 

Reading books have always fascinated me as a child and as an adult. I never recall when was my first book that I received and from whom, but I do recall the people who have had an impact on me; my uncle and my English teacher.

Reading books is a different world for me. I always have a book beside my bed or in my car. And I always live with the characters of the books I am reading, they become a part of my life and I become a part of their world.

I wanted to pass on this habit to my students. I was lucky to be offered a collaborative activity by Ahliah School, and together we made a reading competition come true, which was called “The Battle of Books”.

Students from grades 5 and 6 were assigned to read 21 classic short stories throughout the school year and upon that at the end 4 students were chosen from each grade to participate in the competition.

On Wednesday, 20 May 2015 “The Battle of Books” activity took place and our students had the privilege to win and gain experience.

This activity did not only help my students in sharing, reading and working cooperatively, it also engraved the habit of reading in them and I guess this has made all the difference.
